Smart911 Announces 4th Annual Smart Telecommunicator Awards to Recognize 9-1-1 Call-Takers



Nominations Now Being Accepted as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week Approaches

February 23, 2015 – An unresponsive child was saved through CPR instructions given over the phone by a 9-1-1 call-taker. A bilingual dispatcher’s communications led to the safe recovery of an abducted three-year old. A call-taker’s calm demeanor and precise instructions helped a 9-1-1 caller resuscitate a young girl who was choking on food. These examples of exceptional efforts in the field and dedication to saving lives have all been recognized by the Smart Telecommunicators Awards.

Now in it’s fourth year, Rave Mobile Safety, the trusted software partner for campus and public safety, announced today that nominations are now being accepted for the annual Smart Telecommunicator Awards. In support of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, held each year in April, the awards program aims to recognize 9-1-1 call-takers and dispatchers from across the U.S who have demonstrated superb leadership, performance, compassion for callers, ability to inspire co-workers and overall contributions to their Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs).

Individuals are encouraged to nominate 9-1-1 call-takers or dispatchers they feel fulfill these requirements at through March 17. Winners will be announced during National Telecommunicators Week, April 12-18, in order to highlight the critical public safety role these professionals play. The awards program is sponsored by Rave Mobile Safety’s Smart911, the national public safety service, in partnership with the Industry Council for Emergency Response Technologies (iCERT) and the Denise Amber Lee Foundation.

“9-1-1 telecommunicators work long hours, every day, to answer life impacting calls and mitigate stressful situations, making certain that all citizens can get emergency help when they need it,” said Tom Axbey, CEO of Rave Mobile Safety. “For the fourth year, Rave Mobile Safety is honored to recognize telecommunicators for the invaluable service they provide, and the exceptional positive outcomes for which they are directly responsible.”

On March 25, finalist nominations will be posted online, kicking off a public vote that will run through April 3. Smart911 will announce the winner during National Telecommunicators Week and make a donation of $1,000 to the charity of the winner’s choice. Four regional honorees will also receive awards along with a $500 donation to the charities of their choosing.

Last year’s winner was Danielle Harvey of DeKalb County E-911 Communications, located in Tucker, Georgia. Operator Harvey was named the national winner for her exemplary work as a Certified Training Officer and outstanding job performance. Harvey trains new dispatchers, teaching them response strategies and critical thinking. One of Harvey’s freshly trained dispatchers was just four hours into her first day on the job when the dispatcher answered a 9-1-1 call requesting medical assistance for her own father. Due to the high level of training provided by Harvey, the operator remained calm, professional and steadfast during the call.

“Danielle is an invaluable member of our team here at DeKalb and is respected by all of us. We could not be more pleased to see her honored in this way,” said Marshall Mooneyham, director of 911 Communications. “Her leadership and professionalism, coupled with genuine human kindness and support of her community, makes her an obvious choice.”

Smart911 allows citizens to create a Safety Profile online for their household that includes information they want 9-1-1 and response teams to have during an emergency. When a citizen makes an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right response teams to the right location with the right information. Fire crews can be aware of such things as how many people live at a home and the location of bedrooms. EMS can know about specific conditions for fast, precise medical treatment. And because profiles can contain photos, in the event of a missing child, police can gain an advantage, receiving critical information in seconds versus hours.

In 2014, Smart911 was announced in 39 new locations across 17 U.S. states, making the private and secure service available to an additional 5 million citizens in their hometown, bringing the total coverage area to over 1,000 communities across 38 states. Public safety agencies in these locations are continually encouraging their residents to take a few minutes and visit to create their free Safety Profile, something that can save valuable time in the event of an emergency. Smart911 has been credited with positively impacting emergency situations across the U.S., including the missing child case in Arkansas, and saving lives, such as a heart attack victim in Nashville and a house fire victim in Michigan.
