Tempe Police to Launch Arizona’s First “Smart911” Program


The Tempe Police Department in partnership with Tempe Fire, Medical, Rescue has launched Arizona’s first Smart911 program as an option for community members to provide information online that could make a difference in an emergency.

How it works

Community members can choose to self-subscribe by accessing , setting up an account and entering any information that individuals want public safety to be aware of in the case of a 9-1-1 emergency call to Tempe PD or Tempe Fire, Medical Rescue.

Smart911 is currently available in 35 states and more than 500 municipalities across the country.  Access to the information is limited to the subscriber, Smart911, and public safety only.  Smart911 is NOT searchable by law enforcement.  Public safety access to the information is triggered only by a call from the listed address to 9-1-1.  The information is available for 45 minutes, unless another 9-1-1 call is made.

What kind of information can you choose to enter into the system?

Information you can self-enter that would be available to law enforcement only in the instance that a 9-1-1 call is made:

  • Physical descriptions/photos of family members

o   Example:  a family member with a medical condition such as Alzheimer’s or dementia.  If missing, law enforcement could quickly provide that photo to media.

o   Example:  photos and descriptions of children, in case a child goes missing.

  • Medical Information

o   Example: a family member suffers from diabetes, asthma, allergies, or a breathing/cardiac disorder and requires medications or oxygen at all times.

  • Disabilities

o   Example: a family member is hearing-impaired and may not be able to hear instructions

o   Example:  a family member in the home diagnosed with functional, behavioral or developmental disabilities that may make standard communications challenging.

  • Premise Information:

o   Example: entrances/exits to the home.

o   Example:  Dogs or other animals inside the home or in the yard.

Smart911 works directly with Tempe Police Communications & Dispatch staff when a 9-1-1 call is made from your location.  The information you have selected to post on the Smart911 system at that time is available to responding officers and reduces time consuming information-gathering.  Tempe is making Smart911 available as another means of partnering with residents to respond to emergencies and keep community members safe.
