Rave Alert

THE CHALLENGE

Judiciary systems are challenged by the shear logistics of coordinating schedules that are constantly in flux. Communication can be difficult because attorneys, clients, judges, jurors, media and others often are in transit.

The task is made even more complex when severe weather or other events affect a large number of scheduled events on short notice. Old-fashioned communications efforts using phone trees or radio announcements had limited effectiveness because they are not up-to-the minute.

Increasingly, courts around the country are looking for better communications tools to reach directly to court users in real time. New Jersey was among thefirst to take advantage of developments in social media.

The Solution

In August 2009 the New Jersey Judiciary implemented Rave Alert from Rave Mobile Safety. With no technical support necessary, the hosted system was up in running days after contracting.

“We would not have survived the tremendous demands on our communications office and the Judiciary in general during Superstorm Sandy without our Rave accounts. We kept the entire state, and especially the shore and the inland communities that were devastated by the storm, fully informed and updated all day, every day.”

The Result

More than 5,000 users have opted-in to receive daily email and SMS notifications based on user selected courts of interest, including Supreme Court opinions, press releases, unexpected and weather related closings and much more. The latest use of SMS texts is to let jurors know exactly when they need to report, saving phone calls and online searches. More than 15,000 jurors have signed on since August 2013.

The New Jersey Courts now notify interested parties of critical information in seconds – immediately on their mobile devices. Additionally, the NJ system posts to selected social media feeds, when appropriate, through the integrated Rave Alert platform. The system proves invaluable on a daily basis, but was particularly effective during Superstorm Sandy in the fall of 2012.
