What We're Talking About This Week - October 9th, 2020

A new report from Forrester found that governments are struggling to create a more engaged workforce, seeing dips in resilience and productivity. Essential workers are rallying for state laws mandating workplace safety in New York. California's new data strategy is aimed at interconnectivity, bringing relevant data sets together from across the state. Hospitals that don't report COVID-19 data daily will get a warning letter, risking losing a critical funding stream from the federal government. CNN issued a guide for supporting teen mental health through COVID-19.

Key Points:

  • Since the pandemic began, thousands of Arizona teens have turned to Teen Lifeline, a crisis line
  • In an average year, calls and texts to the hotline decrease between 30% and 40% over the summer. Kids are simply less stressed during summer vacation. This year, summertime volume at the hotline went up by 6%, instead.
  • A much higher proportion of the contacts have come in by text, as well. Many teens are stuck at home, without enough privacy from their families to make a confidential phone call.
  • Those numbers reflect a broader trend of elevated depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder among teens as they cope with the Covid-19 pandemic.

How to Make Sure 9-1-1 Emergency Response Calls Aren't Misdirected

dispatcher 9-1-1

In September, a 9-1-1 PSAP lost four valuable minutes when it dispatched Fire & EMS to the wrong address, responding three miles out of the way during a cardiac arrest call, according to Statter911. The original dispatcher had unfortunately entered the wrong street address and quadrants, which was caught by one of the EMS responders who noted two addresses being displayed in the vehicle. Once the call was dispatched with closer units, an engine arrived on scene and CPR was reported in progress. This incident emphasized the need to revisit response protocols to ensure emergency response calls aren’t misdirected.
