Executive Director of Integrated Marketing and Communications
Bunker Hill Community College
Karen Norton is responsible for driving the Integrated Marketing and Communications strategic plan with campaigns utilizing a variety of communication channels based on content strategy, content marketing and management. She oversees crisis communication, acting as the public information officer for the College’s Emergency Management Team. Previously, Norton was the college’s web director and was tasked with creating a new website and bolstering the college’s online presence. Norton has a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. She is expected to complete her master’s degree in Management from Eastern Nazarene College in December of 2019.
Warning and Communications Coordinator
University of Central Florida Office of Emergency Management
Joe Thalheimer has been the warning and communications coordinator at the University of Central Florida (UCF) since 2014. He’s responsible for emergency communication systems (such as satellite communications, emergency blue light phones and digital signs) and other critical systems used during emergency communications. He works closely with the UCF Police Department where Thalheimer coordinates activities and maintains an effective working relationships with communications personnel. Thalheimer’s other responsibilities include conducting periodic exercises for the Emergency Notification Systems and procedures for the UCF’s emergency hotline and call centers, as well as leading classes on emergency operations centers. Thalheimer received a Bachelors of Arts in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Florida.
Emergency Operations Manager
University of Georgia
John Newton is the emergency operations manager for the University of Georgia. In addition to supervising employees, his responsibilities include the university's emergency notification system, creating emergency plans, assisting with building emergency plans, and creating presentations related to emergency management. Newton regularly gives presentations on de-escalating conflicts, travel safety, responding to incidents of active shooters, and general emergency preparedness. In addition to his role as emergency operations manager, Newton teaches part-time for the Political Science Department. Currently, he rotates between teaching criminal law and criminal procedure. Newton has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Government, a Master of Arts in Political Science and Government, and Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science and Government, all from the University of Georgia.
