Rave Wireless Featured in Solutions By Market, Campus Security Edition

Colorado State University (CSU) has been so satisfied with the successful implementation of its emergency notification system that it is currently augmenting it with a more advanced solution that transforms mobile phones into location-aware personal safety devices allowing students to proactively and instantly be connected with campus police and have the option to activate monitoring of their position by campus police.

When searching for vendors to deploy an emergency notification system, CSU was hoping to streamline reporting and information systems within the university’s existing infrastructure. The only provider that allowed CSU to achieve this was Rave Wireless, a Massachusetts-based company that offers the Rave Alert system. Utilizing Rave’s ability to integrate with ERP systems including CSU’s SunGard Higher Education Banner, the University added alerting system enrollment to its class registration portal, prompting students to opt-in, or choose to opt-Out, to receive emergency alerts via text messages, as well as e-mail. By integrating and advertising Rave Alert registration as part of the system already familiar to and accessed by the entire student base, more than 95 percent of CSU’s student population chose to receive text alerts, far outpacing average enrollment levels nationwide.

CSU was one of the first universities in the country to deploy an opt out enrollment approach in this way, which others have since begun to emulate. CSU was also able to establish an authentication system that allows administrators to have a single sign-on for both their university enterprise and Rave systems, avoiding last minute fumbling to recall usernames and passwords in the event of an emergency – ultimately saving valuable time. By also providing students with a single sign-on, CSU is able to easily remove student information from their systems when students depart the University.
