FOXBORO — A new 911 enhancement, called Smart911, is now available in town.
Smart911 is a free, secure service that allows individuals and families to sign up online to provide key information to 911 call takers during an emergency. It includes new tools to create safety profiles for a faster, more informed response, officials say.
“The additional information and tools in Smart911 has proven to save lives across the country,” Police Chief Ed O’Leary said. “The information provided by individuals enables us to know exactly where to send first responders and who they are looking for. Whether it is a house fire or at the scene of a vehicle accident, those details can help us respond faster and more efficiently.”
Smart911 allows residents and travelers to create a safety profile at smart911.com for an entire household to include information such as allergy information or pre-existing medical conditions.
Besides home and work addresses, information such as pets in the home, vehicle details and emergency contacts can be included.
When callers dial 911, their safety profile is automatically displayed to the 911 call taker, allowing the appropriate responders to be sent to the right location with the right information.
“Seconds make a difference in an emergency, and mobile phones do not provide an address to the 911 call taker,” O’Leary said.
