MAYVILLE – Chautauqua County Sheriff Joe Gerace is Encouraging Residents to Be Better Protected in an Emergency by Celebrating National Smart911 Day.

National Smart911 Day was created to honor and support the exceptional work 9-1-1 call takers do every day and how Chautauqua County residents can empower the first responders by signing up for Smart911.

According to a media release from Sheriff Gerace, Millions of families from all over the country will be creating a Smart911 Safety Profile at www.smart911.com and telling their neighbors, friends, and colleagues about Smart911 to be better prepared in an emergency.

According to the website, over 70 percent of calls made to 9-1-1 come from mobile phones. When you dial 9-1-1 from a mobile phone, the 9-1-1 call takers have very little information to help you – only your phone number and a very general sense of your location. This does not bode well in an emergency when seconds count, particularly if you or your loved ones have medical conditions, or if there is a fire. With Smart911, both 9-1-1 call takers and first responders know exactly what you want them to know in any kind of emergency.

Smart911 is currently available in 40 states and more than 1,500 municipalities across the country, and has been credited with positively impacting emergency outcomes including a missing child in which the girls photo and physical description were immediately available to 9-1-1 and responders, as well as a heart attack victim where an address and medical notes allowed responders to be dispatched to his location quickly.

The sheriff said that participation in this year’s National Smart911 Day will provide critical information to 9-1-1 call takers and first responders that could be lifesaving during an emergency.

Every new Safety Profile created will be entered to win prizes including Apple TV, Boom2 Wireless Speaker, and Beats (By Dre) Solo2 Headphones.

Citizens are encouraged to create their Safety Profile with Smart911 today to have their information immediately available to 9-1-1.

Smart911 is private and secure, is only used for emergency responses, and only made available to the 9-1-1 system in the event of an emergency call.
