Grove City's 9-1-1 Response System Gets Smarter

Grove City is first in Ohio to adopt Smart911, which allows residents to create a Safety Profile for their household that includes any information they want first responders to have in an emergency.

Grove City is the first city in Ohio to adopt Smart911, which allows resident to create a “safety profile” for their household that includes information they want first responders to have in the event of an emergency.

“By bringing Smart911 service to Grove City, we are giving local residents and visitors the ability to provide potentially life-saving information to first responders before an emergency. This is especially important in situations when the caller is panicked or unable to speak,” said Police Chief Steve Robinette.

By logging onto, residents can create a profile that includes information on how many people live in the home associated with the phone number – including a cell phone –as well as pets, the location of bedrooms, whether anyone suffers from allergies or medical conditions and also upload photos, according to Tom Axbey, president and CEO of software provider Rave Mobile Safety.

The technology has been adopted by more than 400 cities and towns in 32 states, Axbey said.

Axbey stressed that information in the system is confidential. It is only made available to dispatchers when the resident dials 911 from a number associated with their Safety Profile.

During an emergency call, the profile is automatically displayed to the 911 operator who can send response teams to the right location with accurate information. Responders can be aware of many details they would not have known previously, and now fire crews can arrive at a house fire knowing and police can have the photo of a missing child in seconds rather than hours, city and company officials said.
