Muncie Now Has Smart911 Service for Residents
MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) – Muncie residents have a new way to feel safe and help first responders with valuable information when they are dispatched to a home for an emergency.
The Smart911 service is free to all citizens thanks to AT&T. The service lets residents create an online profile that 911 dispatchers can see when they make an emergency call.
The profile lets first responders know if there are any details they should be aware of when coming to the residence, such as medical conditions, elderly residents that live in the home or those who need special attention due to disabilities.
“Smart911 is a simple, easy way for citizens to help first responders help them,” said Muncie Chief of Police Steve Stewart. “When police officers are responding to a call for service, having the details at our finger tips will help us provide better service, and help keep people safe.”
The service is secure, private and free of charge.
“Each citizen has the ability to choose which services they want to participate in, and in their safety profile, exactly what information they believe is most important for 9-1-1 and responders to know,” said Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler.
Residents in Muncie can sign up by visiting the Smart911 website.
35 other states have adopted the service. In Indiana, Smart911 is also available in Porter County, Kosciusko County and Vigo County.
