Chickasha Chief of Police Pushes for Statewide Smart911 System
The Chickasha Chief of Police is Spearheading a Statewide Initiative to Improve 9-1-1 Services in Oklahoma.
Chief Eddie Adamson presented the Smart911 plan to the Statewide 911 Advisory Board on Thursday afternoon. Adamson said Chickasha implemented the plan in October of 2013, the first city in Oklahoma to offer the service.
“The system is truly a game changer, in my opinion, for 911,” Adamson said to the board. “It will save people’s lives. When I saw it, I understood why everyone spoke so highly of it.”
Smart911 is a free service that allows citizens across the U.S. to create a safety profile for their household that includes any information they want 911 to have in the event of an emergency. They can include all phone numbers associated with their profile, including cell phones. When anyone in that household dials 911 from a phone associated with their profile, the information is immediately displayed to the 911 operator.
“It empowers the citizen to take proactive steps to give us the information we need to respond to them in an emergency,” Adamson said.
The profile you create is completely private and only shared with 911 when you call from a registered phone. In the profile you can add pictures of people in your household, allergies, medical conditions, any vital information that would help a first responder in an emergency situation. And if you are out of town, the information follows you, as long as the area offers the Smart911 system.
Also, the system allows those who call 911 the ability to text with the 911 operator in cases where they cannot talk, for instance if an intruder is in the house or in a domestic violence situation.
Even if you do not have Smart911 in your area, you can still set up a profile, in cases where you may be traveling in an area that does.
