9-1-1 professionals from across the nation will be gathering in Nashville, TN on June 16th for the NENA 2018 conference. NENA 2018 will provide attendees the opportunity to take away new ideas, get expert insights on the future of the industry, and network with colleagues.

Mental Health and The Power of Information
9-1-1 call centers are at the front end of mental health emergency response. In many cases, the ability to identify mental illness involved calls is obstructed due to inadequate protocols, limited training, lack of data, and gaps in communication with police. That combined with a culture that emphasizes speed of response can impede accurate identification of the caller situation. This is where an additional 9-1-1 information service to provide call takers and first responders with more insight into the mental state of a 9-1-1 caller would work perfectly to know how to best approach a situation before arriving at the scene.
Streamlined Operations with Text-from-911
A growing number of enterprising PSAPs are leveraging applications that allow them to send an SMS text to citizens either when voice communications are not possible or to provide operational efficiencies for emergency or non-emergency call processing. This two-way communication practice is referred to as Text from 911 and through the use of enhanced 911 technology, a collection of 911 centers have been applying this strategy to save more lives and conserve resources.
Disaster Response and Volunteer Management
With a busy 2018 hurricane season forecasted ahead of us, 9-1-1 call centers with communities in disaster-prone areas might run into several issues. Residents wanting to get help for minor emergencies such as reporting a downed power line might clog 9-1-1 lines for more critical emergencies. Some communities had an issue with an overflow of volunteers, willing to help after a disaster has struck. The overwhelming task of coordinating these volunteers while also communicating potential danger zones to keep these same volunteers out of harm’s way can be easily achieved by sending an alert near the danger area to inform everyone to stay away.

2:30-3:30 – The Future of 9-1-1 | Text-From-9-1-1: Saving Lives & Streamlining Operations
While the overall volume of text-to-9-1-1 requests for service remains relatively low, a growing number of PSAPs are leveraging SMS-messaging applications to initiate communications with callers when voice communications are not possible or to provide operational efficiencies for emergency or non-emergency call processing. This session shares strategies that PSAPs can quickly implement to both resolve some of the most challenging calls and streamline workflows.
3:45-4:45pm – Preparedness & Resiliency | Active Assailants: Shortening Response to Improve Outcomes
Deadly active-assailant incidents, while rare, are increasing in frequency. How can PSAPs be better prepared and achieve more positive outcomes during these immediate, destructive, and responder-threatening events? This session examines actual incidents and discusses emerging best practices and assistive technologies. You will also learn how these approaches can be applied to common, lower-severity emergencies so that your PSAP can be ready for any situation.
