Another Success at UNC – 40K SMS in 2 Minutes

Back

The University tested its campus notification process Tuesday that would be used in a life-threatening emergency.

The test, part of the Alert Carolina safety campaign, made sure the sirens worked, that text messages were sent out quickly and that students were made aware of what the sirens would sound like.

Ninety-one percent of the text messages sent out — about 40,000 — were delivered within two minutes.

Other notifications included sending a campus wide e-mail, interrupting television broadcasts, updating posts to the Alert Carolina Web site and reporting the siren status to local news networks.

The sirens were last tested in September. Tests will continue once each semester.
