Prepare! Engaging the Whole Community in Emergency Preparedness
Learn about the innovative approach to whole community preparedness taken by the Town of New Canaan, CT. Working with limited staff, New Canaan has established and leveraged partnerships with faith-based, educational, service, and other community organizations to both provide education to their membership and act as a liaison between their members and the Town during times of disaster.
Michael Handler, Director of Emergency Management for the Town of New Canaan since 2011, has an MBA from Columbia Business School and Bachelor of Arts Degree from Emory University. Mr. Handler volunteers at New Canaan Emergency Medical Services, where he has served for the past 12 years. Concurrently, he spent 15 years in finance and investment management as a portfolio manager at SAC Capital Advisors and as Executive Vice President at Jefferies & Co. In June of this year, he was appointed Director of Administration for the City of Stamford, CT.
Bethany Zaro, RN serves as the Public Health Nurse and Health Department Emergency Response Coordinator for the Town of New Canaan, CT. She is a graduate of the University of Florida and has been a registered nurse since 1998. Her primary areas of focus are vulnerable populations and mass dispensing and she is currently pursuing her Master’s in Public Health.
Noah Reiter, MPA, NREMT-P is the Director of Industry Solutions for Rave Mobile Safety, the most trusted software partner for campus and public safety. He has formerly served as an Assistant City Manager in the metro Atlanta area and has overseen emergency medical services in Houston, New York City, and Atlanta. He currently volunteers as a paramedic with the Medical Reserve Corps of Boston.
