Rave Guardian Expands Location-Based Services to over 80% of Students' Phones

Framingham, MA –Rave Mobile Safety, the leading provider of software solutions for individual, group, and public safety, today announced that Rave Guardian 4.0, the only GPS-enabled mobile safety tool that instantly connects students with campus police, now provides location information for a majority of users.  Rave Guardian 4.0 also collects expanded user profile data such as medical conditions, emergency contacts, class schedules, vehicle information and more, to enable more effective emergency responses.  In addition, for universities and colleges without a 24/7 police department, Rave Mobile Safety now offers outsourced Rave Guardian console monitoring services.

Rave Guardian 4.0 is capable of providing location data for an average of 80% of a campus’ users, an increase of some 65% over earlier versions of the technology. This enhanced service is a result of Rave’s expanded partnerships with major wireless carriers across the US. For users who have opted into Rave Guardian, this location data provides authorities with ‘breadcrumbs’ that record any changes to the individual’s position, presenting authorities with a GPS display of their path via the Rave Guardian console map.  Enhanced mapping such as satellite views is also helpful for monitoring locations of distressed students.

“Rave has been working with the top mobile carriers for more than five years to engineer Guardian’s access to location data from each network,” said Raju Rishi, chief strategy officer and co-founder, Rave Mobile Safety.  “We’ve also been working with police at universities to identify further how Guardian can improve the ability to keep campuses safe.”

“Rave Guardian 4.0’s ability to retrieve and breadcrumb location data for the majority of our students will enable American University’s police department to more effectively respond to specific safety needs of individual students,” said Michael McNair, chief of police, American University.

Rave Guardian 4.0 improves campus police dispatching processes by integrating a user’s vital profile and location information into campus safety systems. It also leverages the recently enhanced data collection and management capabilities of Rave Alert 4.0 for universities and colleges using both solutions.  For example, the system is designed to keep data current by automatically pre-populating or removing user profiles based upon data in other university systems.

As in the past, Rave Guardian can be used in “passive” mode when a user activates the timer via their cell phone to indicate that campus police should monitor the individual’s safe arrival at their destination.  Rave Guardian 4.0 upgrades this process with the addition of voice reminders to inform users when the timer is about to expire.  Rave Guardian can be used in “active mode” through a pre-programmed Guardian panic button that instantly informs campus police that the individual is threatened or having a medical crisis.

Rave is available to demonstrate and provide more information about Rave Guardian 4.0 at the November 3-6 EDUCAUSE 2009 Conference, Booth # 854.
