Furthering their efforts to keep our campus safe, UTM recently signed a contract with Rave Mobile Safety. As a result, all students, faculty and staff currently subscribed to UTM's emergency text messaging system must register with the new provider in order to continue receiving the vital SMS messages.
Rave Mobile Safety, which also serves Duke University and University of Southern Florida, has been providing "mobile safety" since 2004. When the system was tested in August, over 4,000 messages were delivered in under a minute.
"Because of changes in the wireless carrier standards for spam control, it has become increasingly difficult to manage [the old] system. The new Rave Mobile Safety system integrates the messenger sender's console, provides services through the wireless providers, and integrates with other current services the campus has in place," says Shannon Burgin, Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer of Information Technology Services.
In addition to sending mass emergency text messages at a rapid speed, the new system is also capable of sending e-mails and voice-recorded messages. Administrators can also create certain filter groups, making sure information vital to specific individuals reaches only them.
The new system will not charge students for any of the messages, although carrier fees may still apply. Although registering for the new system is not mandatory, Public Safety is heavily encouraging students to do so.
"In an emergency situation, the foremost priority is getting the word out so that potential victims can take informed evasive actions to protect themselves," said Scott Robbins, Director of Public Safety. "The introduction of the Rave Emergency/Event notification system will allow the campus community to receive such notifications in a matter of seconds, but will only be effective if folks utilize it. All that's required is for you to opt-in."
Students can register for the new Rave Mobile Safety system through the Personal Menu on their Banner account. They can also opt in at ://www.getrave.com/login/utm and log in using their MyUTMartin Portal login. Students can then register up to three different numbers to receive the emergency text messages. Students can also opt out at any time by texting STOP to 67283 or 226787.
"Another great thing about Rave is that if for some reason our system is down, we can contact Rave and they can communicate the necessary information for us," says Ray Coleman, Police Captain for the Department of Public Safety. Despite all the features the Rave system has, Coleman warns that there is still one asset it does not have.
"In a crisis situation, word of mouth is still the most vital asset there is," says Coleman. "Crisis management does not end with someone receiving the text-that's just the beginning."
